A Poker Chip Set With Denominations May Be Best For You?  Part 1 of 2.

For this discussion  we will group poker chips into one of two types.  Poker chips with denominations, and chips without denominations printed on them.  This article will cover some of the pros and cons of a Poker Chip Set With Denominations.  Before you invest in a serious poker chip set, you should decide which style suits your usual game.  Then buy accordingly.

If your regular game is a cash or ring poker game, rather than the tournament style poker games, a poker chip set with denominations might be the right choice for you.  The pros of this style are that they usually have graphics on the poker chips along with the values of each chip.  These values are easily recognized by regulars and newcomers alike.   You don’t have to answer “what are the 25’s again?” so often.  If you usually play around the same stakes most of the time, here’s a way to figure out what quantities you might need.  As an example: You almost always play $1/$2 NL Holdem ring or cash game with about 10 players and a $300 max buy-in.   All 10 players buy in an average of 2 times, you would need a total of $6000 worth of chips in the chip set.  When the blinds are always $1/$2 each player only needs a few, say 10 to 20 $1 chips.  Most of your chips would be $5 chips as the majority of bets will use the $5 chips.   Then some $25’s and maybe a few $100’s.  You could make a 500 chip set work, but for a little flexibility and a few extras just in case, a larger poker chip set would accommodate the occasional extra players or different stakes with a little room to spare.  Probably your best choice long run.

The major disadvantage of a poker chip set with denominations is that you are much more limited in the stakes that you can play for with the same chip set, a green $25 is always a green $25, and usually requires a larger chip set with a wider variety of values in order to play high and low stakes or tournament poker.   A chip set of poker chips with denominations is less  flexible in terms of game style and stakes as a poker chip set without denominations  that are valued only by color.  You can value chips without preprinted denominations at whatever you choose.
