Having a poker chip set with values pre-printed on them might be the right choice for cash or ring poker games, the chips without any denominations on them, valued only by color, offer advantages especially if you usually play poker tournaments.  Poker chips without denominations are valued only by their color, you have a lot more flexibility in the value you assign to any particular color.  A green chip can be $25 or $500.  The stakes change dramatically in an two full tables tournament.  Players who may start out with $5000 in tournament chips will be heads up with $90,000 in chips between them.  If you allow re-buys there could be much more. 1 re-buy for each player and that’s $180,000 between just two of them heads up.  You’ll need some high value chips like $5000’s, maybe larger in some games.  Most poker players  won’t need those in cash games.  You need to plan for the chip set that fits that style of tournament comfortably in regards to value/colors and quantity of each color chip.

A tournament like the one above could be hosted with a chip set with pre-printed values on the them, but it’s easy to see you’ll need a wider range in values and more chips.  However you might only need a small quantity of the highest value chips. 

A chip set valued only by color,  with no denominations on them, allows for a lot more flexibility in stakes and will work well for both cash and tournament poker games.   One other advantage of a chip set without denominations is that you can easily customize your poker chip set…. You could even add denominations to you custom poker chip set if you wanted.
